In addition to the repertoire of female composers scattered throughout the concert program, <strong>three lectures in Italian, with English translation<\/strong>, are offered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>July 30<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>: Hildegard de Bingen, being a female composer and musician in the past<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 31<sup>st<\/sup><\/strong>: Nadia Boulanger, being a female composer and musician in the 20th century<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 1<sup>st<\/sup><\/strong>: Paola Prestini, being a female composer and musician today<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_id=&#8221;step-2&#8243;][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=&#8221;3 masterclasses on Unsuk Chin and Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti&#8221; title_align=&#8221;separator_align_left&#8221; color=&#8221;custom&#8221; style=&#8221;dashed&#8221; accent_color=&#8221;#cf264b&#8221;][vc_column_text]A special focus (<strong>in English<\/strong>) given by pianist <strong>Yejin Gil<\/strong> in three thematic appointments. <strong>Contemporary<\/strong> <strong>V&amp;B <\/strong>students can actively participate in the masterclasses.<\/p>\n<p>Etudes by <strong>Unsuk Chin<\/strong> and <strong>Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti<\/strong> are not only performed to improve one&#8217;s piano technique but more importantly to challenge ourselves and explore the limitless possibilities the instrument offers. The goal is not only to read the music, practice and perform it, but also to appreciate the stories behind the pieces, overcome the skills needed to play them and enjoy the infinite colours created by the various voices.<\/p>\n<p>During the course, we will engage in the following discussions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>July 22<sup>nd<\/sup><\/strong>: What did both composers intend to convey through these piano etudes?<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 23<sup>rd<\/sup><\/strong>: New approach to contemporary piano techniques<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 24<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>: An exploration of musical colours. How can we develop our listening skills in relation to this complex music?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_id=&#8221;step-3&#8243;][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=&#8221;3 masterclasses on piano contemporary repertoire&#8221; title_align=&#8221;separator_align_left&#8221; color=&#8221;custom&#8221; style=&#8221;dashed&#8221; accent_color=&#8221;#cf264b&#8221;][vc_column_text]The exploration of the contemporary piano repertoire continues with Professor <strong>Joanna MacGregor<\/strong>. A cycle of three public masterclasses <strong>in English<\/strong>, open to the active participation of <strong>Contemporary V&amp;B<\/strong> students.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>July 30<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>: a look at the piano music by <strong>Olivier Messiaen<\/strong>, with particular reference to movements from <em>Vingt Regards sur l&#8217;Enfant-J\u00e9sus<\/em> and <em>Catalogue d&#8217;oiseaux<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 31<sup>st<\/sup><\/strong>: <strong><em>Extended techniques<\/em><\/strong>. A session exploiting plucking, harmonics and gentle preparations inside the piano. Specific focus on movements from John Cage\u2019s <em>Sonata and Interludes<\/em>, George Crumb\u2019s<em> A Little Suite for Christmas AD 1979<\/em> and <em>Fazil Say<\/em>\u2019s <em>Black Earth<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 1<sup>st<\/sup><\/strong>. <strong>Jazz Styles<\/strong>. Looking at jazz rhythm and harmony in classical music. We\u2019ll consider repertoire including works by Frederic Rzewski, Alberto Ginastera, Nikolaj Gir\u0161evi\u010d Kapustin, Earl Wild on George Gershwin, as well as jazz transcriptions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_id=&#8221;step-4&#8243;][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=&#8221;Special masterclasses by Alfred Brendel and Bruno Giuranna&#8221; title_align=&#8221;separator_align_left&#8221; color=&#8221;custom&#8221; style=&#8221;dashed&#8221; accent_color=&#8221;#cf264b&#8221;][vc_column_text]For many years now, Virtuoso&amp;Belcanto has had the honor of hosting two legends of 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century music: <strong>Alfred Brendel<\/strong> and <strong>Bruno Giuranna<\/strong>. Both will hold <strong>public masterclasses dedicated to chamber music<\/strong>, on dates yet to be defined.
