VIRTUOSO & BELCANTO FESTIVAL
Lucca, 16 JULY – 29 JULY 2018
Virtuoso & Belcanto is a clear and intelligible mission statement reaching out to all musicians, and needs no translation. In fact, there was never a true virtuoso that did not possess the gift of cantabile as a main characteristic. And one cannot mention composers who were symbols of virtuosity such as Paganini, Liszt or Chopin, without mentioning Belcanto.
The Virtuoso & Belcanto Festival is a celebration of the history and musical heritage of the city of Lucca. Within its walls famous composers such as Puccini, Boccherini, Geminiani were born, along with many others. Lucca is also the town where Paganini became Paganini.
The Festival seeks to revive this unique tradition through the collaboration of established international artists and teachers with young musicians from all over the world. It will be an intense two-week program filled with lessons, masterclasses, workshops, conferences, and concerts, all dedicated, primarily, to the classic and early romantic repertoire.
Chamber music will have a central role in this festival, in honour of Luigi Boccherini.
The Virtuoso & Belcanto Festival summer course is an opportunity for young musicians to study with some of the most important artists from around the world. Each student will have the opportunity to take lessons with all the teachers in a chosen study program.
All registered string players will be allowed to take part in the activities dedicated to the chamber orchestra repertoire, headed by Maestro Jan Bjøranger.
There will also be a special workshop called Esperienza Classica in which a selected group of students will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with period instruments.
Five competitions are planned on themes of virtuosity and belcanto, reserved for those musicians participating in the summer course (piano, violin, viola, cello and chamber music). These competitions come with sizable prizes that will be in the form of cash, concert engagements or musical instruments from violin making workshops.
The 2018 season of the Virtuoso & Belcanto Festival will include a prestigious collaboration with the International Violin making School of Cremona, whereby the School will have their instruments on exhibit and offer a violin to the first-prize winner of the competition.
The program of the Virtuoso & Belcanto Festival will include a rich series of concerts and presentations throughout the entire two weeks, featuring both renowned artists and talented young musicians from all over the world. The concerts will take place in some of the most unique and beautiful spots in Tuscany. Music lovers will not want to miss out on this special occasion.
